Questions: History and Reception of (Japanese) Anime in Nigeria

On a completely different note. – I have recently stumbled on an article/blog post about (Japanese) anime in Arabic over at Muftah. Written by Razan Idriss, an avid fan of anime as a child, the article notes that

'by the late 1990s and early 2000s, many Arabic speaking children watched dubbed anime daily, featuring then-contemporary shows such as Detective Conan, Slam Dunk, and Ana wa Akhi (Aka-chan to Boku). […] Yet, anime in the Arabic-speaking world has gone unresearched by academics and pundits alike.'

You will have to agree with us that these are beautiful examples of animation coming out of Nigeria as well as of this particular kind of Nigerian humour I admire. The first episode of Bino and Fino, the Nigerian produced children’s animation series has been published on Youtube – and timely (not like me being a week behind here) this episode explains the occasion of the recent independence celebrations. It explains, for children, of course, colonial rule and the struggle (well, for the sake of kid’s understanding they make it sound a bit less of a struggle) for independence. Enjoy!!! ...
